On the 18th of July, MIGS staff joined forces with representatives of women’s organisations and NGOs members of parliament and other stakeholders, in an act of solidarity and protest against the decision of the Supreme Court to reduce the sentence of two convicted rapists. The case involved the kidnapping and rape of a migrant domestic worker. The protest took place outside the Supreme Court on 18.07.2016

Among those present were Ms Eleni Mauvrou (MP) and Mr Giorgos Perdikis (MP) and Vice-President of the Cyprus Green Party, Efi Xanthou, as well as staff members of the Ombudsman’s office. Following the decision of the Supreme Court to reduce the sentence for the two rapists from 12 to 10 years for not having used ‘excessive force’ against their victim, the Cyprus Women’s Lobby called on citizens and civil society to #StepUp against rape culture and victim blaming that pervades our society as well as our institutions.
